What Anti-Rippers is All About

Sat Feb 21, 2004, 11:32 PM
I did alot of thinking the past two days while off work. I've taken alot of what the admins and others have commented here into some serious consideration. Even if it does seem that this is all about creating a lynch mob, it really is not my intention, and I really do not want to see this become that sort of group.

So this is my new idea on what to do with this group. Instead of being a lynch mob, or gossip hounds, lets make this an awareness association. Put that you are a member of this organization in your journal. Let the rippers looking through your gallery know that you're vigilent and on the lookout for would be theives. Let them know you are Anti-Rippers.

I would want to make some banner type images that will be uploaded to this account for other people to add to their homepages as a seal that they will not lay down and take it.

It was never my intent to take a pot shot at the admins, it is an issue, and the best way to fight anything in through awareness. Anyone who joins should note this account to have your name added to this journal entry as a member.

You should then make sure to put : iconanti-rippers : (without the spaces) in the footer of your journals. Anyone who wants to make a banner image please upload it to your DA gallery and send a note with the link.

We're not going to take it, ripping is lame and illegal.

What to do if you suspect you've been ripped:
1. First off report the specific image with the "Report Violation" link found on every page. Give the admins a few days to look into the issue and provide them with as much proof as you can.
2. Take a screenshot of the rip make sure the whole window with the url is visible, this way you have a record of the incident.
3. If a day or two goes by and you receive no response from DA staff and the image is still posted on DA you can send an e-mail to violations@deviantart.com. Send them:

  1. Link to the original work.

  2. Link to the "ripped" work.

  3. Whether this is a constant problem with the ripper.

  4. Name of the ripper.

There has been alot of heated discussion here recently, and hopefully this will be a good medium ground everyone can be happy with.

Rules (Under Development)
1. We are not a lynch squad, we are also not here to hear complaints and accusations of theft, if you feel someone stole your artwork please see the steps above to help alleviate the issue. If you followed those steps and go no response, leave a post here (since some of the admins do read this it appears) and give as much information as possible. The members and people who run this group however cannot help you.
2. Name calling, useless explicit language, and posteuring need not apply, its pointless and a waste of space. Gossip is also not allowed as well as heresay.
3. This is not a place to chat, so try to keep the pointless "hey whats up" or " Totally agree" type posts down.
4. Please feel free however to post comments and links about copyright law here to help educate people. Good links will be compiled and added to another journal entry in the future as a resource.
5. And finally respect everyone, even if they are suspected of ripping, and don't be obscene. We're all adults.

What it Means to be a Member
1. You will not lay down and let someone steal your stuff, you will be viligent and be on the look out for rippers.
2. You are aware of the process that DA has enlisted to alleviate copyright infringement and artwork/writing theft and will pursue those methods.
3. That you do not condone ripping, or copyright infringement of any kind.
4. You work to be vigilent and report people for stealing work even if its not your own (perhaps the work of Luis Royo, or a friend).
5. You believe that giving credit where credit is due and receiving permission for using non-stock artwork is the golden rule with art.

dev-watch the group, then if you list your friends or groups you are members of in your journal, do so, and send a note to this account or make a comment on the above journal entry and your name will be added.

I think what everyone doesn't understand is that this isn't here to accuse or finger point against anyone, in fact this is here to AVOID that very thing from happening.

Mis-understandings happen, and maybe at 5 am my wording of the respect part was bad, I meant, do not insult them, report it. The point of this place is so rippers who have been caught can be noted so that once the comments on their accounts disappear there is a notation of their past dirty deeds, so people can BE wary of those types of people.

Frankly I think DA has a very poor policy of dealing with people that steal the artistic works of other people, and a community to help people bond together and recognize "habitual" offenders is a good, non-agressive manner in which to deal with the problem at hand.

Either that, or maybe DA needs to consider a stricter policy against rippers who are caught, or provide more information concerning DMCA complaints and a tracking system via tickets for complaints logged.

For every person I have reported ripping I have never once received a note or comment from a Admin about it, usually you have to badger the offender until they get sick and remove it. Thats not a very effective method of controlling it. IMHO

But I'm rambling, the point of this is notification, without aggressiveness, and to pass information to others about offenders. And to provide a support group to those who have been robbed, or victimized by rippers.

"to pass information to others about offenders" is against policy. Spreading rumors, true or false, is not allowed. I've reported tons of rips and for the most part they've all been taken down within a day or two. If they do it again, they get banned. It's not your job to put these people on a spotlight with the scarlet letter R and be some sort of twisted vigilante lynch mob.

DA has put more admins in to the help desk to make this more efficient, which it has been. A site for people to publically announce rippers or to complain they've been ripped by someone will only stir up the pot and lead to pv's not only to the rippers but to the people doing the accussing. Let the admins do their job and also reportr the violations that you see. They WILL be taken down if they truely are rips.

Yeah tell that to burninginside or the countless other people who had nothing done about their creative work being stolen.

How about people who get their works stolen who aren't on DA? What then for them?

Again its not spreading rumors, rumors implies a negative intention, and a negative intention is not what the point is. However giving an artist support when they are having illegal actions taken out on them is, copyright violation is very real and happens everyday, and unfortunately I have yet to see proof that DA adequately handles their copyright violation complaints.

If it is believed this idea is against TOS or DA policy then the admins and owners are more then free to delete the account and I'll go on with my life. But I know how much it hurts artists or models to see someone shamelessly stealing, mis-representing, and mis-using their copyrighted material.

Lets say I had something ripped by ripper69. If you posted that ripper69 may have posted my work without permission than people will go and abuse ripper69. It may not be you but it will happen. That is still a rumor even if it were fact.

Look at the crap shadowcatsomething went thru when she was accused of ripping, everyone swarmed her, filled her page and the comments of her submissions. She pretty much lost all artistic credibility for those couple of weeks, and even then there are people that don't believe she made the drawings she still has posted.

When *minix first came to DA she almost left because someone thought her J Lo painting was just a smudged picture and if she still has it up you can see how they were like a pack of wild dogs with her, but she proved herself eventually.

It will happen because it's happened in the past.

Good intentions or not, this will become a headhunt and this page will be banned.

The comments on ~damneddark's page that you and others from this club made, if they're any indication of what anti-rippers is, it's already a mockery of what you posted. You have a romanticized view of this club, one you can't even live up to. Do you not understand it's not your job? Report it. If, in a day or two it's still up, report it again. Give actual reasons and links to support your theories and just don't type "ripper69 ripped renonevada so ban him" or something like that. That is how you can help DA with rips, not by pointlessly arguing with alleged rippers.

damneddark had gone beyond reason however, you didn't see the history, the abuse he put the person he stole from through. Or even the flames left on mine, or other people's journals after we politely told him that he needed to remove the offending material.

I started this to avoid those sort of things from happening. Because obviously not all offenses being sent through the reporting method are being received, if they were the issue with damneddark wouldn't have gotten to that point of multiple, and I mean 5+, ripped items.

DA provides no forum to get assistance when your work is illegally posted on DA, and perhaps they should, they provide a forum for people who have their DA pieces put elsewhere.

The other problem comes when a ripper steals one piece or two pieces they get caught, and maybe they or DA delete it. Fine, but DA and maybe the person ripped from didn't recognize the 20+ other ripped pieces that person has in their account. So there is no accountability, and instead of the issues being resolved all at once, you now have the admins being flooded more then one instance at a time about the same ripper.

I don't think there is any polite way to handle it, but I don't intend on this becoming a headhunt either because that is NOT the proper way to handle the situation. But on the same token I don't want to see people get frustrated because they are continually being ripped, DA isn't responding, and the offender is only becoming more rude and beligerent, fed by the fact that DA isn't doing anything.
